Plastering

In most modern homes, there is not a great demand for plastering a wall. There are some instances, when the skill of plasterer may be required to smooth out the wall of a new alteration or plastering may be needed when an existing wall has been repaired.

It has been said that plastering is 10% skill and the remaining 90% is simply following a few basic guidelines on how to achieve the perfect finish. Before a keen DIY’er decides to plaster a wall, it is essential that they have the necessary tools within easy access. To achieve the desired effect, it must be remembered that the wall must be plastered at once – this means there can be no stops and starts and for this reason, having the necessary tools and materials on hand is important.

A trowel is one of the most important plasterer’s tools and since the aim of the project is to achieve a perfectly finished smooth surface which appears as if it is has just been built, the objective is to work the plaster in such a way that it adheres to the surface. The trowel will be needed to apply the plaster and to then work the mixture by virtually polishing it to state of perfection.  With the mixture applied onto the wall, the trowel will then be used to smooth out any imperfections and this is done by adding water and smoothing and flattening the plastering mix simultaneously. Once the area has been plastered, the next phase will be to give the finished surface a light sanding.

Although 10% of plastering is skill, there is a definite technique and often this skill is acquired over time.  If only a small amount of plaster work is needed, this may be a good way for the first-time plasterer to determine their skills and see if they do have a knack for plastering. If however, there are several walls to be done – it may then be far better to call in the professionals, who have mastered the techniques and who will get the job done perfectly without any hassles.
