If you have just moved into a new home, or you are looking at how to revamp an existing room, the best way to claim the space and give it a personal touch is with painting and decorating.  When it comes to decorating a room, the first step is to decide on a theme. Do you have a particular style in mind? Do you love antiques and want to bring a few antique items into the room for decor? Perhaps your style is simple and you want to give the room more character and charm by removing the clutter and accentuating one or two pieces of art or furniture.

Once a decorating theme has been chosen, the home decorator can then find paint colours to match the theme. If an oriental or Asian theme the decorating theme of choice, white or ivory for the walls would work well while dark furniture and accessories will create an interesting contrast.  When choosing paints, the home decorator need also consider what the room will be used for. If the area is going to be used for entertaining – paint colours ought to be bright and cheerful and any selected decor playful.

In terms of painting and decorating for a formal seating room, muted colours tend to work well and of course good quality paint, rich textured paint will also give the formal room, a sophisticated touch.  When painting a child’s room, care should be taken to choose paint which is non-toxic and pastel colours are a perfect colour combination for walls.  With painting and decorating a room being an expression of one’s personal interests or one’s personality – all decor and decorative items must be personally selected by the homeowner, like photographs, arts, furniture, etc.  Wall or paint colours should be chosen on how the colour can enhance the decorator’s personal decorating sense.
