Central Heating
A central heating system is something that we cannot live without. Considering the fact our home’s heating system is an essential part of our daily lives, it makes sense that all homeowners get to know central heating basics and be able to spot the warning signs when things go wrong with the home’s heating system.
The sound of odd noises coming from the central heating may be an indication of a problem. A strange gurgling noise emitted by your home’s central heating system might mean that air has become trapped. To resolve this, the radiator ought to be bled; this will free any trapped air pockets. At some stage, the trusty boiler will sound off key and a definite creaking sound or noise can be heard throughout the house. The hot water that is piped through the home’s heating system will cause the pipes to expand, if the holes that accommodate the pipes are not big enough, a creaking sound may be heard.
If a humming sound is heard from the boiler itself, it could be the boiler’s pump is not secured correctly or that the pump’s mountings have worked loose. If the sound is however heard at the radiator or at the pipes, the pump may be turned up too high and is forcing the water around the system at a rapid speed. By turning down the pump, the water is then circulated at a steadier pace. Knowing what to listen for and knowing how to deal with the sounds correctly could save money and remove the need to call in a heating expert.
If your central heating system is making a distinctive banging sound – check that there is sufficient water in the system and once again, the sound may be due to trapped air. If in doubt bleed the radiator or make sure that a pipe has not worked itself loose.
